Rollins College Serves Orlando

Help us get viral by sharing this post

Did you know that as of January 2018, Florida has an estimated 31,030 people experiencing homelessness on any given day? That is a lot of people battling poverty – all without access to basic hygiene necessities.

To the average person, soap is one of those items that is automatically added to the grocery list. But, to many in the homeless community, a bar of soap is a rare luxury. Homelessness is an ongoing epidemic not only here in the United States, but all around the world. Fortunately, Clean the World and countless charitable partners work around the clock to provide hygiene resources to all people affected by poverty and homelessness.

On April 1, 2019, Rollins College and its’ volunteers partnered with SALT Outreach and Clean the World to tackle the issue of homelessness by assembling a hefty 400 Hygiene Kits for those in need in Orlando.

SALT Outreach has a comprehensive approach to addressing homelessness in Orlando. Their outreach center offers showers with the help of their mobile shower units and provides new wardrobes through clothing trailers. In addition to these programs, SALT also provides many other services such as free haircuts, job training, and meal distribution.

“One homeless friend came to us and said he had a job interview, and he hadn’t been able to shower in close to a week. We provided the hygiene kit, gave him the other supplies, and he was able to take a shower. He then received clothes to be ready for the interview. Another homeless friend came to us that same day just to say hi. He said that it was because of the work we’re able to do that he now has a job. The hygiene kits help make this a reality.”

– Eric Camarillo, President, SALT Outreach

What's in a standard hygiene kit?
